@niko we have an air conditioner running in one room now and it uses a lot of power, without it we were using something like ~8 kWh per day. now even though we still generate more power than we use, since it's still running for a while after the sun sets it quickly drains the batteries and we import some power from the grid at night

@niko today we used 19.3 kWh (but produced 25.4 kWh)

@kemona_halftau in practice they are certainly often used synonymously but I'm not sure whether that is actually correct or not

@kemona_halftau I know someone on IRC that insists that they're different, but I didn't really understand their explanation of why.

@mcc @dotstdy by dynamically linking to glibc. glibc is backwards-compatible, so if you have a newer version of glibc than the version the appimage was built with then it works

@mcc @dotstdy they don't, which is why they (usually) don't work on systems using musl instead of glibc

how do people in places where it is regularly >40°C survive (especially without air conditioning)? it is 35°C here and that is already far too hot

@fediplayssnake I'm curious as to what the consequences worse than being banned could've been

[ 346.51 GiB] deleting '/gnu/store/830gi1yha4p26nhvwahnyxkfx9zxk69r-texlive-fixltxhyph-2026.1-builder'
deleting `/gnu/store/trash'
deleting unused links...
note: currently hard linking saves 28.57 GiB
guix gc: freed 280 GiB

(it actually only freed ~74GiB, presumably due to btrfs compression)

two weird networking issues upon rebooting:

  1. no ipv6 default route is getting added (“fixed” by adding a static route)
  2. > cat /etc/resolv.conf
    nameserver 194.168.4.100
    nameserver 194.168.8.100
??? that’s not even my ISP

I think I will just have to reboot (after 26 days of uptime)

the problem seems to be that for whatever reason it's invoking the old spectacle binary. if I use printscreen it's /gnu/store/b33yav3j8vgskmy0y9qsn3pwa0dbmzyj-spectacle-6.5.5/bin/.spectacle-real, if I invoke it manually it's /gnu/store/n1dccw00fzgb8c1mx9q09nzzv6k6jwvx-spectacle-6.5.5/bin/.spectacle-real

I can still take screenshots by manually invoking spectacle, but the print screen button doesn't work

it’s quite annoying that after updating kde plasma I can’t take screenshots without logging out and back in again:

An error occurred while taking a screenshot.
KWin screenshot request failed:
The process is not authorized to take a screenshot
Potentially relevant information:
- Method: CaptureScreen
- Method specific arguments: "DP-4"

does anyone know if there is any solution to this that does not involve re-logging-in (and therefore killing all graphical programs)?

RIP BBC Radio 4 Long Wave, which ceases broadcasting at 01:00 BST tomorrow morning (Saturday 27 June)

and also RIP the Radio Teleswitch service, used to switch between rates on UK electricity meters, which ceases transmission for good on the same frequency on Tuesday. Someone can turn off that VAX emulator now.

the answer is yes-ish, but only because one of the packages failed to build
