5,000 Jolla Phones pre-ordered in one week, driven by the community.

People showed there’s real demand for a European Linux phone built differently. The Jolla Phone reached 5,000 pre-orders organically, through community sharing and word of mouth. Thank you. We couldn’t have done this without you.

Next stop: 10,000 pre-orders to unlock The Other Half and open source the modular hardware & software interfaces.

@jolla I genuinely wonder why you didn't include the headphone jack though.
Sure, most people have bluetooth headphones now (or just blast brainrot on speakers in public transport...), but it would be nice to have a headphone jack (which isn't hard to implement).

I don't think enough people talk about it, but saturation of bluetooth devices on the train for instance makes bluetooth congestion *very* bad. My headphones tend to lose packets when I'm taking the train (no matter if I'm using them with phone or computer), and that's entirely caused by corporate greed and manufacturers getting rid of headphone jacks.

That's the reason why I'm using old Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite (xiaomi-pyxis) as a music player. 512GB microSD card loaded with FLACs I bought online or ripped CDs, stick a headphone jack in and you're good to go. Even ANC works if you turn headphones on before plugging the headphone jack in.

If you try to use any bluetooth accessory in places like Chaos Communication Congress, you'll be simply out of luck. Amount of bluetooth devices at the venue successfully jams the bluetooth band.

That's why having a headphone jack is important and we really need to start talking about bluetooth congestion problem in urban areas.

"Thinness" isn't an answer by the way. My KOHAKU (Samsung Galaxy Chromebook) is as thin as Google Pixel 6, but it has a headphone jack (as well as 2x USB-C and microSD reader).

MediaTek will be fun to mainline though.

@jolla Will factory resets be paywalled again?

@perry @jolla Last time they made phones you had to pay to get a factory reset.

@jolla I appreciate the effort but please open source all components of your OS, otherwise I cannot in good concience recommend you and won’t consider buying my next phone from you

@elly @jolla I do not know about congestion but I do know that bluetooth for me is totally unreliable. The small devices have batteries and tiny buttons and are a total pain to charge, get lost and so on. Wired connections is what I use for headphones for that reason and bought my last phone because it has a jack. That said many jack sockets on my devices have broken off jacks in them and there is no way of getting the broken off jack out. Then bluetooth to the rescue....

@wojtek @elly @jolla it’s a Pain in the Ass and sticks out like a literal sore thumb

@domi @elly @jolla why it's Pain In The Ass and where does it stick out?

You mostly need it to connect headphones to telephone so the adapter would be connected to headphones like 99,99999% of the time. You can get one more flexible/bended…

physical aspect wise IMHO it doesn't matter that much.

I do wonder about possible sound quality implications though…

@wojtek @domi @jolla
1. You can't charge your phone or connect any other accessories while having DAC connected (without additional adapters).
2. It's inconvenient to use.
3. You *will* lose it sooner or later.

Implementation costs pennies because both Qualcomm and MediaTek offer everything needed to implement it as a standard package.

@elly @domi @jolla how

1. how often do you need to liaten and charge at thr same time? (also - you can get pass-through adapter)

2. jack is quite strong. but in such case maybe invest jn powerglue?

3. coat is not insignificant becasue its another hole and another port in the device...

@wojtek @elly @jolla do you just like excusing manufacturers imitating apple, or…?

@elly @domi @wojtek @jolla I am in this situation myself, after switching from my Poco F1 to a Fairphone 5, much to my disappointement I realised it doesn't have a headphone jack...

Right now I use an adapter, but I mean, I had to buy that adapter separately, and frankly it's just more convenient to just have the jack built-in. I can also lose it at any point...

(And no I don't charge my phone while having headphones connected.)

@fun @domi @elly @jolla So maybe next time pay more attention to what you are buying? ;)

and the cost of the adapter ruined you? (hint: you won't have to buy it with every new phone!)

Also: how long do you have it? do you imagine actually loosing it? would probabily of loosing the adapter be on par with loosing the headphonese as well? ;)
