i maintain that the FSF are controlled opposition

> The initial work is funded by a donation from FSF board member John Gilmore

> I later discovered that the LineageOS distribution links in significant proprietary binary modules copied from the firmware of particular phones.

They're gonna find a phone to replace all the proprietary parts with foss replacements

everything here hints to them not even knowing about the "lineageOS mainline" efforts

but its wild to me that they say firmware but dont seem to understand what the fuck firmware is

@cas They're going to fracture the effort by starting something new rather than funding an effort that is already happening.

How frustrating!

@cas FSF is acting like bunch of politicians going "yes, I know computers".
Even their beloved ath9k (muh freedom!!) has firmware... because it has to. Try certifying a cellular modem without tamper protection (BootROM-enforced signature), good luck lmao.

Not gonna lie, as much as I hate Android... I jumped in my chair when I saw that LineageOS folks are working on getting it running with mainline kernels. Imagine dual-booting Linux/Android by using EFI services from U-Boot, that would be awesome.

@cas highly doubt that'll materialise at all in the end

I take the "hopefully they collab with pmOS" comment back

@elly @cas the WiFi chip has bad firmware, so it's been disabled, the Cellular modem has good firmware, so it's fine or something?

@elly I'm surprised about it too, but it's very much welcome in my opinion! As much as I try to stray away from Android I keep coming back to it because a lot of mobile Linux projects don't fit my needs. So if I'm going to use Android I might as well use a build with mainline ;)

@cas Let me rephrase that:

everything here hints to them not even knowing a fuck about anything

'everything here hints to them not even knowing about the "lineageOS mainline" efforts'

Nor do I, sounds super interesting!
Is there a blog post or something from lineage about this, I would like to know more :)
