but its wild to me that they say firmware but dont seem to understand what the fuck firmware is

Even their beloved ath9k (muh freedom!!) has firmware... because it has to. Try certifying a cellular modem without tamper protection (BootROM-enforced signature), good luck lmao.

Not gonna lie, as much as I hate Android... I jumped in my chair when I saw that LineageOS folks are working on getting it running with mainline kernels. Imagine dual-booting Linux/Android by using EFI services from U-Boot, that would be awesome.

@elly @cas the WiFi chip has bad firmware, so it's been disabled, the Cellular modem has good firmware, so it's fine or something?

@elly I'm surprised about it too, but it's very much welcome in my opinion! As much as I try to stray away from Android I keep coming back to it because a lot of mobile Linux projects don't fit my needs. So if I'm going to use Android I might as well use a build with mainline ;)

@cas The fact that Google will lock down Android next year and pretty much kill F-Droid and all competing stores with it makes me think whether the Librephone project makes sense at all nowadays.

Why isn't the FSF actively working on improving existing Linux phones, like the PinePhone or the Librem 5, and/or non-Android operating systems like pmOS?

@carbonatedcaffeine @cas It's just an attempt to revive Replicant, which already claimed to be completely open but wasn't, and is going to fizzle out as quickly as any other FSF project.

@Sturmflut I remember replicant. I just checked and it seems pretty stagnant to me.

Best case scenario it doesn't go anywhere or they end up helping fund LineageOS with the effort instead. Though I doubt the latter will happen since they don't exactly adhere to the FSF's values.

Argh it makes my head hurt.

@cas I find the whole #LibrePhone announcement pretty condescending towards the rest of the community. They even manage to throw a punch at LineageOS, the people who did all the work they're directly building upon.

Somehow the #FSF managed to pull this off even worse than I had come to expect them to. Impressive.
