my #39c3 art project is done! I took a VHS-C camcorder to the event and did my best to capture the vibe and art installations without violating the photopolicy.

It’s my first highly-edited video in over 5 years, so please excuse the roughness around some edges. Hope you enjoy it!

@domi Were the huge posts with lights in room H (the ones with loud air compressors) not there during buildup? (I thought they were part of CCH, because I couldn't see how one could disassemble them to a more manageable length; if I'm wrong I'm curious who brought them.)

@robryk afaik they’re permenent in there, but we add some deco to the outside. there are some visible arount 00:57 - 01:05 in the vid

@robryk @domi This entire thing consists of three parts that are assembled and disassembled on site: the foundation (the big metal cross) followed the metal columns and on top the movable lattice where the lights were mounted.

also funny how your camera performs completely ok inside but the tube(?) is completely.shot in daylight

@aetios yeah something about the light intensity measurement is cooked. idk why exactly. the CCD itself also doesn’t like being overexposed for too long, but artifacts only appear after 30+min of continous use

also: the outdoor footage was most heavily color graded by me of everything. it was originally even worse XD

@domi Amazing! Has some kind of "the backrooms" feel to it, but on the other hand reminds me of old Congress in Berlin. The VHS video and lighting makes Saal 1 look like the old room in Haus am Kölnischen Park. Kudos!

BTW: Your blender is crashing from time to time? I have even better, mine doesn't even launch at all and generates tons of nouveau errors in its output and in dmesg :P

i’m on proprietary nvidia drivers and they SUCK. hopefully getting a proper PC next week, i’ll have my amdgpu back

@domi well I can't even use them because alpine doesn't support them and even if they did the one for my card hasn't been updated in years

@domi In general anything that dares use that GPU either ends up not launching at all or it's unusable and has a whole bunch of graphic artifacts

@domi I can't even use the integrated intel GPU (it's a laptop), because hp thought it would be a very cool idea to just disable it electrically. So I have an intel GPU in theory, but it's hardwired to off for dear life. And everything display is hardwired to the nvidia gpu

@domi Yeah same, that very same computer I use also came in an AMD FirePro variant... I wonder why I didn't get that one instead

this would be doable (even with the signature instructional tape narrator voice), but i’d need to shoot more footage during very early 40c3 buildup. also shouldn’t be too hard to edit, so if i’m there on the ~16th, i can probably get it out by 18-20th (and then it’ll be actually useful to new angels)

@robryk @domi I took a photo of hall H on day 5 during teardown, you can peep them in all their half-disassembled glory. Outside of the shot a couple were unbolted so the individual box sections could be lifted

@0x6e6174 i’m planning on getting some pro video8 camcorders, ones that properly go on your shoulder (to reduce the shakycam xD). definitely gonna take that to 40c3, although I want to aim for a drastically different end result for that future supercut. no spoilers for now!! ^^

I can relate to the point about feeling alone. Especially this year, I felt more distant the the others I was there (partly because personal reasons and partly because I don't really have a community I belong to there).
The whole building is filled with people who share the same interests but I am too scared to even go near an assembly in case I annoy them or don't know what to say...

Last year I could compensate by giving a talk, the year before that by being there for the first time. But this year, idk.

Anyway, after all this sad talk, here is my dog trying to stop me from watching this masterpeace^^
