@kemona_halftau I wish bluetooth audio devices had free firmware, then it would be possible to make them use a better codec

@noisytoot true, although i think it would be more energy-efficient if they also used special hardware-based audio codecs, if such a thing exists

@kemona_halftau do most existing bluetooth headphones use hardware (en|de)coders?

@noisytoot not that im aware of, but i do know some older strictly mp3 (and mp2 and mp1) players (i normally hate the term “mp3 player” but im specifically referring to music players which only play mp3 files) used hardware-based mpeg decode logic chips for example

a modern codec like vorbis or opus would be more complex to implement in hardware, but perhaps a dedicated (open hardware) microcontroller architecture for audio processing (fewer cycle times for floating-point operations and better optimized for operations like fft/dft and lpc) would suffice and could be extended to support more (and possibly better) audio codecs in the future

@kemona_halftau @noisytoot I doubt any consumer mp1 things existed because MP1 is like a stripped down version of mp2
