@cwebber Another proof of its centralization? He's reaction is quiet deceptive IMHO. A decentralised social network is a tool against censorship, for freedom of expression. Did he forget?

@cwebber@social.coop And not a single mention of decentralization in the comments.

@imacrea
Good observation! How could block a decentralized network? They would have to block most of the internet, then.

The article had misleading statements.

"Bluesky itself has only a limited user base in Russia, mostly among people looking for alternatives after X — formerly Twitter — was blocked"

is also formerly - it was made by Twitter!

"The decentralized social network" - It is not, even though they keep saying it will be in the future.

None of them opened without a VPN, unfortunately

@sosquqer @imacrea @cwebber none of the above sites load even a bit of html in russia?

in that case it should still be possible to use a local app build, or git clone/run social-app locally

@cwebber what exactly did they block? the official relay? just the bsky.app frontend?

@noisytoot @cwebber yes, although it'll be trivial to block all other Bluesky domains

@cybertailor @esm @imacrea @cwebber
But you have to turn it off to access anything Russian and I found splittunneling somewhat hard to setup perfectly. There are still some sites on pc or apps on mobile that refuse to oblige.

@cybertailor @esm @imacrea @cwebber
And it is even harder for someone not well versed in the technology. I've just set up a VLESS vpn for my grandparents to access YouTube, Telegram and WhatsApp and I have to pray for it to not break. They live in another town and I know I won't be able to guide them to fix it remotely. That's the thing that's frustrates me the most.

@Earl @imacrea @cwebber
> How could Russia block a decentralized network

by blocking everything that's not allowed. The Kremlin has showed readiness for that.
