@faxmodem Because while it would be technically correct, it wouldn't send a Message™: that pronouns are fine, actually, and the chcoice is mine.

A few clarifications: I meant gendered pronouns. My mother tongue (Hungarian) does have pronouns, but they aren't gendered. I'm not going to edit the poll, because I don't want to clear the votes. Apologies for not being clear!

Second: one of the reasons I'm not defaulting to "he/him" is that while it would be mostly1 correct, I... wish to do more to break down stereotypes. For example, if I were to use "any/all", that may suggest to some that I'm genderfluid (I guess?). If a beardy, hairy, clearly masc dude can be genderfluid, anyone can. I don't mind if anyone thinks I'm queer. Frankly, that would be an honour!

"they/them" would help normalize singular they (or plurality! I'm fine with helping both).

All "he/him" does is show that a white dude can use his assigned-at-birth gendered pronouns BS. That's a step, yes, but... I kinda feel like I can take a larger step there.

Perhaps - as some suggested in other replies - something like "he/they/it/any" could do the trick too, signalling that I leave it up to the other party to decide. That's tempting too, but... I'd still prefer to go with a single pair. Feels like that's a stronger stance.

  1. @doctor might insist on they/them, out of spite, just to disagree with me. ↩︎

@algernon for some reason the original post didn't federate to my server but all the replies did

@noisytoot Hm. Maybe too many poll options? (there's 6, iirc some fedi software limit it to 5)

@algernon there seems to be some sort of validation error (either a bug in how GTS sends polls or how Akkoma validates them, I'm not sure which one) but I don't think it's the number of options since I can create polls with more options than that myself (and I've seen other polls with more options get federated)

@noisytoot Nothing I can do about it on my end, I think - I'll report it to GtS upstream with your logs included.

@algernon @noisytoot not federating towards me either ^^

re: that post: the work on iocaine is more adjacent to itsec than not, and there are plenty of non-techie furries around anyhow :3 the denial is starting to become a little silly

if you don’t care and he/him feels a little boring, any/all it is. Or it/its if you’re curious if anyone can crack the therian egg :3c

@noisytoot Reported upstream. Thanks for confirming the problem on your end too, @hsza!

Re: furries: I know its silly, that's why I continue denying it like that - it's a fun play, because it's such an obvious fake! But that is all it is, a play. There is no egg to crack there, I'm afraid.

Although there's an hour left on this poll, I submitted my profile update to Rustweek, to get it out of the way before last minute panic hits.

I ended up with "it/its", to lean into the mouse persona. That feels more impactful than "any/all" or "they/them", and closer to reality1.

But! If (when?) I present next, I'll use different pronouns. I'll rotate them like I rotate my avatar. Next time someone asks how to introduce me, I'll tell them to use multiple pronouns. Not as "he/they/them", but "he" in one sentence, "it" in another, "them" in a third, or something along those lines.

  1. Reality being: I don't care, but I want to send a message. ↩︎

@algernon i feel like now that contractually forces you to show up with mouse ears

@SharpLimefox Not sure I can make that happen. But the mouse persona will be there in some form.

If I have to pull it out of a hat, I will.

"He's a serial drive-by contributor, they have patches in keyboard firmware, in Debian tooling, syslog-ng, and a whole lot of other things. Lately it's messing with crawlers with iocaine."

Something along those lines.
