@gewt with conventional ISPs yes, but i’m getting VDSL through @openfactory and that gets me 15ms to 1.1, while my other ISP (a local one) through DOCSIS does 40ms on a good day (with bafflingly high jitter if there’s any data going through the link)

it’s really funny how much the ISP’s infra matters here, the last mile options are comparable (if maintained properly, with margins)

A good Broadcom DOCSIS modem can do 10ms ping times to a real-world target.

A good VDSL modem can do 5-6ms ping times to a real-world target.

In theory 5G wouldn't have to be so awful, but the current modem firmware of most vendors is just a buggy, bufferbloat-fueled mess.

@manawyrm @domi @openfactory @gewt Just looking at my current smokeping stats I’ve got about 17ms difference between pinging the cable modem and the nearest real world target (quad9 dns as it happens) .. midco is IMHO very progressive, they have had full IPv6 for quite a while and the speed tiers upgrade periodically for the same price.
