the mastodon compose window change somehow manages to be as polarizing as if they announced genai integration. and honestly i'm so confused

@whitequark An interface idiom (Tweetdeck) which many people liked has been systematically exterminated from every site and frontend it is used on, except Mastodon Ruby. Now it is being removed from this site as well. You could imagine that anyone who liked Tweetdeck would probably have preferentially attracted here, and be in more of a place to be annoyed about this.

@mcc that makes sense. i think the columnar design of tweetdeck was basically unusable and the tiny compose area is annoying but i wouldn't die on this hill. i haven't, so far

@whitequark I would be 100% ready to die on the hill of "stop putting big rounded edges on everything" but the number of hills I have to die on has increased to the point I probably have to compromise on squircle corners. Logically, I can only die on one hill.

@whitequark How.....?! It's obviously terrible how it is right now. I constantly confuse things in it especially when editing, the error messages if you get them are like in a whole other part of the window and it's super awkwardly squeezed weirdly into a corner with tiny af text.

@whitequark @mcc tbh I liked the columns, made it easier to segment my follows into different feeds

But I was a desktop, large screen user so…

And mastodon columnar view is an inferior version; can’t even multi account

@mcc @whitequark not every frontend except mastodon: both akkoma-fe and pleroma-fe still have a compose window in the sidebar

@whitequark I'm not sold on it because it appears to cover the feed while composing and I do a *lot* of cross-referencing the thread when writing, so that would be really annoying. (on tusky my average post gets put into my clipboard at least once so I can close the posting, re-read something further up, then continue)

@gsuberland that would be pretty bad but since they're doing actual user research i think it'll probably not how it will work?

@noisytoot Can I use akkoma-fe atop mastodon dot social?

@mcc I'm not sure. The other way round (mastodon-fe on akkoma) is in theory possible but unmaintained and quite broken, and I know people have got akkoma-fe working with iceshrimp, but I'm not aware of anyone having done that for mastodon.

There's also nicolium, which definitely does work with mastodon and has a deck interface, but at least in the latest release (I don't know if it's different in the development version) the compose window is still a modal (although in the normal (non-deck) interface it is possible to put it in the sidebar)

@mcc @whitequark there is no limit to the number of hills you are _ready_ to die on, though. Eventually you will be prepared to die at any moment, at any place, on any sort of incline
