I'll be going on a holiday in Germany! In this thread I'll document some stuff along the way :)
Good morning from a fully booked ICE, luckily got a seat reservation. Or as my friend said, paid €5,50 to change the color of a LED.
First destination: Wuppertal Schwebebahn
Now taking a Proxmox train to Cologne, to take a look at the cathedral. Unsure if we can manage to climb it.
Arrived 11 minutes too late at the Cologne cathedral to climb it, oh well
Found the IEEE Milestone sign for the radar predecessor by Christian Hülsmeyer
Today in trying to buy a D-Ticket:
my own Android phone's battery is quite broken, but on my work iPhone I am somehow unable to create an Apple account to download apps. So thank you @q for allowing me to use Zügli to transfer a ticket I bought on my Android phone to my iPhone Wallet (which does not require an Apple account).
@eloy It's like a sugary butcher's shop. The fruitiest meat you can buy!
@eloy Have you ever been in Bonn? :b
Funfact: Its actually HaRiBo which stands for Hans Riegel (The Founder) Bonn. In the times of the Ahrtalflood in 2021, the corporation gave a part of their grounds to the first responders, so they were able to store/build tents, equipment, manpower. (since most of the factory were either part of the first responders, or living in the flooded parts. So normal production was not possible abyways.)
I wonder if Beethoven would have approved using his lyrics by city-marketing bonn e.V.
Unfortunately for us closed today but this looks really cool
@eloy Totally, a friend told me it was really nice.
Now at Bonn Hbf, time for some D-Ticketmaxxing to Kehl, which borders Strasbourg on the other side of the Rhine
@eloy They have a *really* old Zuse (I think the oldest working original one that gets shown to the public)
One of those things where you notice the room getting hotter as it calculates the first hundred fibbonaci numbers :)
@eloy right, it's literally on the linked website lol
a Zuse Z25 🥰
Bonn has some pretty awsome museums,,,
@la Yeah I need to go back there on a day that is not a Monday lol, it's not *that* far from NL.
@eloy well, tbf, as far as I can remember the Zuse isn't part of the regular exhibition. It's something they sometimes show on guided tours (I grew up in Bonn, so I was there quite a few times, and I've only seen the old Zuse once)
But maybe we could organize with a few people from CCCAC, maybe some Datenburg people and general friends of old computers to go there together. It's worth a visit regardless, but if we get a reasonable group together maybe we could get a tour including the Zuse.
:tom_scott: I'm in Karlsruhe. THE LÄND is very Nett.
I'm not going to GPN aufbau but going further to Kehl. Due to DB we are allowed to take an ICE to Offenburg with D-Ticket.
@eloy A running one? I know they have a bunch of non functional ones and a replica Z1 (mechanical, it's completely bonkers) in the Berliner Technikmuseum.
I have never seen any irl Starlink advertisements before but today I have seen multiple at German stations
I can believe that's an improvement in a country coming from ISDN where nobody bothered to put any glasfaser in the ground
@eloy They put coax into the ground instead, with return path blockers. Later they removed the blockers, so that DOCSIS would work. Now millions of people are stuck with 1000/50 connections where less backwards countries have 1000/1000 or even ten times that.
@eloy you know what the difference between a lyric and a title is… right?
@eloy heb je tenminste wel een foto van jezelf bij de cathedraal?
@eloy OMG, 4th from the left, is that... SPEZI HARIBO?
I'd love to try that.
Ask the Germans, Dutch, Swedes, Italians where the capital of Europe is and they would surely say: Brussels
Francois: Strasbourg
🔜 Mizukon
@eloy One of my school teachers liked to use the nickname 'Baden-Baden' for a pupil whose surname was 'Baden'. Which, in hindsight, was pretty odd given that the school was 750km away and in a different country.
Arrived in Karlsruhe, but again not yet for GPN: going to Technik Museum Sinsheim
they have a Concorde and a Tupolev \o/
@eloy And the Technik Museum Speyer is just around the corner. They have a Buran...
@eloy :krombacher_bordbistro:
does that mean there will actually be #SpeziChallenge at #gpn24?
btw feel free to join matrix:r/stickers:spezi.expert
