It is one thing to convince your friends to use XMPP, it is another to have them easily be able to sign up their friends too.
https://txw.ca/mod-signup-keyword/
This is a mod for ejabberd which allows in-band registration with a fixed pre-shared key. It replaces the standard mod_register.
So your friends can pass this PSK to their trusted friends, and they can sign up for an account, and pass it to their trusted friends.
An XMPP Client needs to surface a UI element for the PSK to be entered, and returned to the ejabberd server. I’ve tested it with my hobby client, Mach.
@noisytoot yes 7.3 TL4, if you know anybody else who does, I’d like to meet them.
@noisytoot I wish I had the capacity to own and maintain the hardware, but I do not, so I’m not able to answer your question. I use IBM Cloud. One of the most knowledgable folks I’ve seen online though is Nigel Griffiths or ‘Mr_nmon’ - he’s a former IBM Champion so if he can’t help he can find the person who can! https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/aixpert-blog-nigel-griffiths-mrnmon
@debacle the mod_invite generates an invite that I understand is one use only by one person. It is suitable if you are the operator who can generate them, and invite other people to the server. For me it fails when your friends desire to have their friends who you do not know have an XMPP account on the server. Then there is a clumsy flow of interactions to get this person a token for an account. OR, with mod_signup_keyword your friend just says ‘Invite is LettuceBFriends’ and their friends are onboarded and enjoying XMPP. It is an optimistic worldview i admit.
@plzupgrademe instead of a customized UI, you could implement XEP-0445, both on the server and your client. You’d share the key by sharing a dedicated XMPP URI (see XEP). There’s already a bunch of clients that support it (Monal, Siskin, Beagle, Yaxim, Conversations, Dino(?))… or have planned support (Gajim).
@plzupgrademe @debacle you can allow „friends“ to create invites using mod_invites restricting it to a group of jids using ACLs. But admittedly each invite can only be used once.
I thought of adding a new type of tokens that would allow a fixed number of accounts to be created with it, but that would require extending the data model a bit. 🤷♂️
@plzupgrademe I realize now that you’re implementing XEP-0004, do you know which clients support this? Might be interesting for mod_invites to have that too. They are not mutually exclusive.
Btw, if you had support for XEP-0445, you could pass on those URIs using a third party website like https://xmpp.link or https://invite.joinjabber.org.
It’s just that with your implementation you wouldn’t invalidate the token in contrast to what the XEP suggests.
@plzupgrademe hi what is the app for sorry not good with tech stuff but curious
@plzupgrademe hmmmmmm having just this weekend set up an xmpp server that will be public... this is interesting 🤔
@nigel I am happy to hear it. If you’d like to test a client for MacOS that is also welcome! You must’ve had a good weekend.
