to those wondering what “worked” exactly, here’s what i did:

at the start of the refuge, do all the normal steps to make an elevator button (metal can from the cafe, scissors and magnets from the apartments, tape from the office), attach it to the elevator, but then instead of doing the film thing which requires moving the window off the edges of the screen, ignore that completely and interact with the lamplighter and ask them to “guess random codes”

then the fun part

leave the game open in the background for at least 35 hours

eventually the lamplighter will guess the code correctly and the elevator will be open

(also remember to let niko take a nap after all of that)
