@hexaheximal @esm what’s your definition of social media such that irc isn’t social media? wiktionary defines social media as “Applications or websites allowing users to share content and communicate with one another through the Internet.” which certainly includes irc (unless you argue that it doesn’t count because it’s a protocol and not an application or website, in which case the irc client is social media instead of irc itself (because an irc client is an application, or a website if it’s a web client), but I don’t think referring to a client as social media makes much sense)

@hexaheximal @esm activitypub is just email but json+http and with better list handling (following someone is standardized, unlike the process of signing up to a mailing list)

@noisytoot @esm ...both of which use tcp, ip, etc. - the protocols themselves is not very relevant imo beyond intended use case, but rather their actual usage
