i hate linux memory allocation

options are “oversell and freeze” or “don’t oversell and crash when physical ram isn’t enough to fit new allocation, even if there’s several gigs of empty swap”

switching from a glibc distro to a musl-w-alternate-memory-allocator one does not solve freezing when low on ram

at what point do i force-restart losing all the unsaved data lol
surprisingly, it does go to suspend mode fine w lid close?
it’s been like…close to 40 minutes now?

@6 don't force restart, repeatedly manually invoke the oom killer with sysrq+f until it unfreezes (assuming you have magic sysrq enabled). I have to do this all the time.

(and yes, linux's memory management sucks and the allocator has nothing to do with it. I wish overcommit was off by default but opt-in per allocation using MAP_NORESERVE, instead of MAP_NORESERVE having no effect if overcommit is disabled. also it should take swap into account, I didn't realize it didn't)
