Gonna move the ONT into the server room tonight and get it plugged into the existing battery backup. ablobfoxbongo
I am excited.

Considering also hooking up the ISP’s gateway to my managed switch to see if I can get another public IP - I’m supposed to be able to get two with my service. neofox_3c

If I do, this will be the first time that the ISP’s gateway has been powered on and connected since the initial install. neofox_laugh

I’d otherwise have done a virtual interface on the same physical interface and VLAN to get another WAN IP through OPNSense, but it doesn’t support doing that.

Last time I was able to do this, it was on a Sophos firewall, and I much prefer the interface and features of OPNSense, so I’m not changing firewalls. That would also require a lot of re-configuration (that I don’t necessarily have documented anywhere). neofox_woozy

@maddy telus giving everyone two public v4s and two public /56 v6 subnets just makes me laugh

My plan was a success, and the ONT has been moved right beside my router in the server room!
Pictures to come after I have dinner.

This’ll be split into a couple posts for the poor souls on instances that can’t display more than four photos in a single post. /joking /light-hearted

Got the cable unboxed and immediately got to work! You can see the red cable that used to be connecting the ONT in the laundry/utility room to the managed switch in the server room/second bedroom.

It’s kind of funny, the wall panel where the fiber comes in had a coupler, and I didn’t even realize! I hadn’t looked in the thing since we moved in. I really only needed the longer cable!

ONT is resting beside my router, speeds are where they should be, and everything is working as it should!

The cable had plenty of slack, making it so I didn’t have to get too creative with my run. If/when we have our own place, I’ll work on a more elegant solution at that point rather than running them along the floor.

There was an issue - the cable was retaining its shape from being coiled, making it a tripping hazard. I worked around this with a little duct tape!

@maddy interesting that you can actually move your ONT, both of mine are attached to the wall where the fibre comes in

I got the ISP gateway hooked up, and it grabbed a WAN IP without any drama!

I’m not sure if the ISP pushing out firmware updates is a scheduled thing or what, but most of the web interface’s pages are marked with 2021, and some of them with 2019. neofox_woozy

I’ll leave it plugged in for a few days to see if anything changes, but I’m not sure I want to trust this thing with anything important.

@maddy Have you ever used gaffers tape? If you haven’t, definitely pick up a roll, you’ll never go back to duct tape. 😉

@jaye I don’t think I have. Regarding convenience factor - can I hand-tear it from the side with ease like I can with duct tape?

@maddy Tears even better than duct tape! The good stuff has a cloth-like surface and a adhesive that holds, but doesn’t leave awful residue. (As long as you don’t leave it for years…)

@jaye Oh HELL yeah. I’ll have to pick some up next time I’m at a hardware store - thanks for the tip!

@maddy Hardware stores don’t cary it sadly. You’ll need to go to a music store. It’s used in theater/music venues. I always keep a few rolls around. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaffer_tape

@jaye Oooh, okay. I’ll have to seek it out one of these days!

@noisytoot @maddy if it's the same my company uses, which includes the one pictured above, they just snap into their wall mounts. You should be able to pop it out, though ime, it takes more force than you would expect. Probably to prevent people not in-the-know from messing with them
