My partner went to the rental manager’s office the moment they opened this morning, got a bunch more excuses, had the manager lie about sending an email that we never got, and a sketchy promise that maybe the AC tech is back today.

I’m fucking done with these clowns, so I’m going to try reaching out them with every possible contact method that I can reasonably do while I’m at work.

My message is: “Hi, [unit, and location] here

Who are we supposed to reach out to in an emergency when both the local office and call center are telling us that their hands are tied, and they’ve been keeping us in the dark for two weeks without any updates, cooking in our apartment without working AC? We still don’t have a scheduled date for repairs, and the apartment has been getting up to 30C in the evenings.

We need a solution before one of us gets heat exhaustion or heat stroke in our home. If a tech can’t be booked immediately, I suggest a hotel room be booked at no cost to us.

I can start citing sections of the [regional] residential tenancies act if it makes something happen faster.”

Our HVAC Tech is back, and I have been able to book him for Thursday in the morning to come and have a look at your A/C.

In the meantime, I have also called our maintenance supervisor to see if he can locate a portable A/C unit to provide you. I will let you know if and when he has located one and set up a time to get it to you.

Thankfully, they got someone to show up with a portable AC unit that we can use until ours is fixed, and they installed it for us!

nevermind that they plugged it into a power bar that was plugged into my UPS which caused it to scream "OVERLOAD" when they shouldn't be plugging an appliance like that into a power bar at all, but hey!

@maddy i don't even trust this 14000 BTU unit plugged directly into a wall outlet let alone a power strip

@maddy Good thing your UPS is competent - I had a cheap one in the early 2000s that my mother in law plugged a vacuum cleaner into and it burst into flames!

@maddy couple 12+amp appliances on one circuit. It will be fine

@niko I switched it over to a wall outlet as soon as I could. Should be just fine, I’m sure.
The compressor startup is likely the most load-heavy part of the cycle, and while wall outlets and the circuit wiring are generally rated for so much, the instantaneous or short-term current load they can handle should be much higher.

@maddy the faceplate does say power rating 11.5 amps which concerns me somewhat

@fwaggle Apparently! Got really lucky with the unit I picked up, considering I didn’t put much thought into specs aside from general capacity.

@niko oh, well I’m not an electrician but iirc there’s something about keeping usage of a circuit 80% of its capacity or lower for safety, so it should be fine!

@niko @maddy is a circuit breaker being rated for equivalent power to the outlets on it normal in places with radial circuits (i.e. almost everywhere but the UK)?

at home I have three ring circuits (downstairs, upstairs, kitchen and back bedroom) which are on 32A circuit breakers, but each outlet is only rated for 13A individually
