really wish there was a fully open-source minecraft client (i dont just mean a mod to the official client, i mean an entire rewrite with no code from the official client whatsoever)
@kemona_halftau there's some partial ones i think ? one for alpha / beta idr and one for newer versions but lacking featured (minosoft)
@kemona_halftau I don't really see any benefits other than maybe performance. It'd probably be a pain to maintain
(kemona_halftau)
@neko i wish that were the case, but minecraft java edition is proprietary software, behind an (increasingly restrictive) eula license
(kemona_halftau)
i also wish more minecraft servers allowed using non-microsoft account services, even if those alternative services are centralized, i’ll take it over completing an arkoselabs captcha

@kemona_halftau @neko isn’t minecraft now effectively tied to a microsoft account that they can cancel for no reason given and then force you to repurchase all your software? I think it also nukes your onedrive irrecoverably, i wouldn’t know for sure because I don’t use those services myself in the first place.
Seems like it ranges from minor inconvenience to ruining your year if you have critical work data or irreplaceable memories tied to that account. (The average windows users don’t really understand backups let alone multiple backups.)

@jabokoe
I think my minecraft account was nuked because I never converted it to microsoft. Kinda sad with the dumb things like capes but also reflecting the virtual places I made my friends over the years and places I dreamt up for myself becoming distant or disappearing.
The community does lots of cool things with mods and modloading but even moddistribution has had drama and the whole vibrant ecosystem can just suddenly vanish if someone unhinged at microsoft wants to sue it out of existence one random day.
@jabokoe @kemona_halftau yes. there have been accounts that have been deleted permanently after the mojang to microsoft account migration period ended, for those that didn't have time to do it. there's a lawsuit going on about that iirc
although that's certainly not quite legal, there is no drm in minecraft java, you can launch the game without a microsoft/mojang account, and that has been done for years
