the oom killer keeps killing either firefox or kde plasma, even if neither is responsible for causing the oom

firefox was using 2gb of ram, plasma was using 800mb, and the process which needed all that ram was not a child process of plasma

also librewolf, despite using 3.8gb of ram, was entirely immune

@kemona_halftau does the oom killer actually trigger? for me it almost never does, the system just freezes and I have to invoke it manually (it may be relevant that I have no swap)

@noisytoot it does for me, very frequently, although i have an entire 128gb swap partition enabled for hibernation (i hibernate my pc to save energy whenever possible)

@kemona_halftau does it really save that much energy compared to suspend-to-ram or do you just not have working suspend?

I never got hibernation working properly and although I do have working S3 suspend (except on my server, but I don't need it there anyway) I usually just leave my laptop running 24/7 so I have complete IRC backlog (ZNC sends a limited amount of lines only) and so it can keep seeding torrents overnight

@noisytoot suspending seems to almost never work when not connected to a wlan access point for whatever reason(????????????)
it will go to sleep just fine but then immediately resume from suspend a few seconds later
i messed around with some kernel stuff to try and prevent it from waking from anything other than the power button and nothing seemed to work

@noisytoot suspending also never works without the wifi card installed or any firmware/drivers related to it
