Wow, I wrote this code so long ago it's got the wrong name in the credits!
(the code is 7 months old)
It's normal to have published source/software under FIVE different names, right?
1. A few very early bits of code under my birth name (1998-2003)
2. A few VN extractors & APNG hate code under my 4chan nickname, late 2000s
3. A bunch of software under my 3D Movie Maker name (1999-2008ish)
4. Everything else from 2008-2026 under Foone Turing
5. Everything since April 2025 under Alice Averlong.
God I hope I'm not forgetting anything. I have more names than this but I don't think I published any software as them
@foone when you need version control to keep track of your own names
I get a new name approximately every decade and I'm 41 and I've been coding since before I had a computer to touch, so I've published a LOT of shit under a LOT of names
Maybe I should start my own calendar system, like how the japanese era names work, but based on my own names?
(after all, I'm a pope, creating new calendars is one of my jobs)
We're currently in the year of Alice 0, with Alice 1 starting January 1st.
@foone china has historically had multiple eras within the rule of a single emperor, so it's not entirely out of the blue.
@noisytoot I was very mad about APNG when it came out and how badly mozilla acted with regards to deploying it as a web standard, so one of the things I did was write some code for a couple different languages to make it easier for people to block APNGs from being uploaded to their site.
4chan deployed it, as did a couple other imageboards I was connected to.
@foone @superflippy nope, it’s Alice 1 NOW. Anathema! The schism starts now!
@revndm @foone @superflippy, schism no. 2: it doesn't start 1 January. Instead, it starts on 1 January.
@foone names alice, who lives in a pile of keyboards adn has 5 million names,
@foone @noisytoot i wanna know more about what mozilla did there
@foone
Does that mean everything before is B.A.E.? Before Alice Era?
@heathen_cat No, it's just a different era.
1983 is Jesus 1983 (or Common 1983 if you're nasty)
1984 and onward are the <deadname> era, then 2000 we switch to Travis Wells 1, which lasts until 2007, and <4chan name> 1 starts with 2008, with 2012 being Foone 1, up until this year, Alice 0.
@foone The big question: Do you zero-index your eras? Are we in year zero or year one of The Alice Era?
@Canageek Of course they're zero indexed, I'm a programmer!
The year I take on the name, it's Year 0, then Year 1 begins on the first of the next year.
@foone How is the final/ first year of the new name labeled? If you change your name on November 3rd, when does year 2 start? Do they match the calendar year, or does the next 365 days start with the name change?
@Canageek
The final year technically has two names. It's the old era, and 0 of the next era.
So this year is Alice 0 (since I name changed back in march/april), but it's also Foone 13.
@foone I'm also curious what apng hate code is, I recall people talking about it as replacement for gif, but it never seemed to catch on
@Canageek I just was pissed at mozilla for how they rolled APNG out at the time, and wrote some code to keep APNGs out of several sites
@foone i mean i know you're a pope but being a prophet is a whole different ballgame
@foone If you repurpose names, do they get epithets? 4chan the Lame, Alice the Elder?
@Rgsharpe that'd be neat. so far I've never reused names, though
@foone oh dear, how can people even get it right if they travel in time?
@foone So what you're saying is you've been hogging all the names for yourself, is what you're saying.
