yeah no, i give up on nixos
just going to switch my other systems to aerynos
at least it has a full genai ban
how can people be so lenient towards literal fashtech
@cloudskater itโs alpha but it works really great
itโs an atomic distribution that works in a very simple way (as in literally just swapping /usr with a new one) and in my experience is rock solid
gets you most of the advantages of an immutable distro without the disadvantages
i like it enough that i contribute to the project :3
definitely recommend giving it a try!
and if youโre interested, join the zulip!
@cloudskater and yes it has full support for flatpak
anyway going to try and focus on positive stuff more, a lot of stuff in rapid succession made me really frustrated
@lumi oh, is arynos a new declarative distro or something?
@luana less than nixos, more than most distros
i really like its design tho
Get productive fast with built-in tools like Zed Editor, Ptyxis terminal, and Starship prompt.
it is ironic for a project with a full genai ban to be including an โagenticโ text editor that is โcrafted for speed and collaboration with humans and AIโ by default
To install AerynOS, your PC needs to be x86_64-v2 capable (Intel 1st gen Core/AMD FX-4/6/8xxx and up), have working UEFI firmware, and have an entire disk reserved for AerynOS.
do you know if aerynos has any plans to support architectures other than x86_64-v2 (specifically x86_64 without SSE4.2, aarch64, and ppc64le), or booting from BIOS/coreboot grub (most of my machines do not have UEFI)?
@lumi (๐ท Sadie - she/her) ya n my system both tbhโฆ
-_-
@lumi I have the website for that distro open in a tab here... been eyeing it up.. ๐
@lumi It's utterly disappointing, but sadly not too surprising. Remember the Anduril thing(s) from not too long ago...
I unfortunately don't see myself migrating away from NixOS back to a more traditional distro anytime soon though, the package manager and declarative system management with rollbacks is just too damn nice... I hate this...
My hope is that some Nixpkgs alternative with good morals and the fucking spine to stand up against garbage like this eventually goes public, so I can drop from Nixpkgs and help with that...
@Puna @lumi You may not have to wait long!
Check out https://auxolotl.org/en/
They're making an alternative to nixpkgs from scratch, and they're trying to address some of the inherent nixpkgs community issues too.
They're currently (at last check) trying to implement a binary bootstrap, similar to how Guix does it. So no real package set yet, but it'll get there.
https://discourse.nixos.org/t/call-to-ban-ai-commits/78262/66
why do i even bother
theyโll just ignore all of the serious issues and focus on the quality issues because those are the only ones they can defend
@lumi i've basically given up on the nixos community with the whole shit about the involvement of fashy military companies..
i basically just keep using it for my servers because i have no alternative and only keep the gotosocial package up to date because i need that , and have just stopped engaging with everything else..
It was set up as a refuge from nixpkgs users back when NixOS was undergoing the first round of controversy about sponsoring Anduril.
IIRC that was about the same time lix split off and people were looking for community forks.
Aux started up around that time, but instead of merely forking nixpkgs, they started doing their own thing to address some of the DX issues the community was facing.
The project is pretty ambitious-- nixpkgs isn't just a package set, it's also a set of builders, functions, and some pretty opinionated language conventions built upon layers of technical debt and well-meaning intentions, back before modern nix lang conventions existed. So to abandon it completely in favor of a different direction means rebuilding all of those tools from scratch too.
I wish them the best, because I'd love to see some more diversity in the landscape, and there inherently ought to be a community led fork that can self determine free from whatever is happening in nixpkgs.

wait did this person really call us an HOA
lmao
@lumi well they're right about one thing, this is fucking embarrassing, but not the thing they think.
