When half your infrastructure was set up before you figured yourself out a little better, so your old handle is used for the username, but it feels like too much work to rename the accounts and fix relevant permissions, so they just perpetually stay that way.

@maddy
Of, load bearing deadname. That's uncomfortable, sympathy.

@maddy my deadname is contained within a nextcloud username. this, of course, has consequences

@maddy Can’t you just change your username and keep the UID so permissions are unaffected? You can even have multiple usernames per UID if you want to keep the old one, I think whichever is first in /etc/passwd will be the canonical one. Some BSDs have two accounts sharing UID 0 (root and toor)

@noisytoot I honestly haven’t bothered to look into it ‘cause it has seemed much easier to use it as-is rather than start digging around.
Thankfully it’s just my old handle rather than my necronym, but it still does bring some discomfort.

@noisytoot But that would make things a lot easier if I can do that. I’ll have to read up - thanks for the idea!

@maddy this is me with my login on os x. Changing it breaks A Lot Of Things (tm), so I have to build a new profile from scratch and it's very slow going
