Volpeon Can’t we just go back to AIM or ICQ or whatever when software wasn’t gamified to hell yet
XMPP!
i really miss the days where i could just run adium and have multiple chats in XMPP and IRC all in the same app.
@volpeon Maybe it is time again to revive vBulletin and phpBB and make web 1.5 forums again.
Volpeon People tell me about XMPP and IRC, but what they forget is that my original post includes the impossible task to get people you know to move there.
@volpeon I used AIM right up to the day they killed it. It was a good instant messenger.
@volpeon counterpoint: I played the AIM warning system like a kind of game back in the day
@volpeon Surprisingly, yes... https://github.com/mk6i/open-oscar-server
@volpeon posts to the fediverse complaining about not being able to get people to use a different tech stack.
@volpeon That'd be nice.
I really miss using Pidgin and being able to just ctrl-tab between unread text messages and reply in order they were received, and being able to keep things in their separate windows arranged in a way that made sense to me.
@volpeon Nice then you'll probably also be interested in https://escargot.chat/ 😅
@volpeon I know how this goes. I'm still on IRC, and I'd love to see more people on there, but a lot of people just refuse to leave Discord.
I still hold out some hope though. I know you and I are on the same server at least once.
@volpeon Oh and some point we're actually going to finish making this easy to install and release it.. https://github.com/pidgin/retro-prpl/blob/main/README.md
Yes, Please. Dump AI slop. Dump Surveillance Backdoors. Dump Billionaires controlling every F-ing thing!!!
@volpeon at this point I've decided the hassle isn't worth it and I'll just move somewhere myself if I need to, and if my friends actually give a shit they'll follow me there, if only to talk to me. I've been running 3 chat apps at startup for years now just to keep up with people, surely I'm not the only person who should have to extend the same courtesy
