before everyone freaks out over the discord thing, read the statement from discord rather than just reading the headline
Discord users can choose to use facial age estimation or submit a form of identification to its vendor partners, with more options coming in the future.
facial age estimation, the very same tech which was bypassed by garry’s mod face posing tool
as a policy, on paper, sure, this is bad
but we don’t live on paper, thermia guesses this will probably be trivial to circumvent
@thermia i do unfortunately live on paper i access discord thru a teletypewriter so this will be severely affecting me
@thermia fr though 5$ this is just cover-your-ass-ing from discord and you'll be able to fool it by putting on a trenchcoat and stacking up with a friend
@thermia okay but they should improve it so people are forced to use the best chat platform (irc)
@thermia “Man am I lucky to not be living in england” I thought to myself a few months ago, blissfully unaware of the horrors
@thermia the sooner everyone freaks out and leaves shitcord the better off society will be however so don’t grasp at straws to give people reasons not to
@thermia also apparently they’ll do that activity analysis thing where they can supposedly estimate if you’re an adult by messages, game activity data, etc.
@thermia i guess they learned from their mistake of their age verification provider getting data breached lmao
@thermia this is gonna be what gets me to make my own fake ID at the age of 45, isn't it
to clarify, absolutely make a riot about the fact that lawmakers are imposing this on companies
but thermias initial reaction when reading the headline was “oh it’s never gonna send its ID to this company and it’s going to loose the main contact it has with so many friends”
which isn’t the case for now because it’ll be easy to circumvent
it’s still appalled that this is being mandated, don’t get it wrong
@thermia also, the fact that they do this at all is still bad
thankfully i deleted discord long time ago
@thermia I'll be trying to see if it will fall for https://this-person-does-not-exist.com/en
@thermia thing is, how many of these Overton window shifts are people supposed to endure before they drop their sunk cost fallacy? The fact it can be cheated doesn’t make it a better place to use really
Over the past few years Discord has rolled out so much awful shit I’m starting to get the impression the mental gymnastics of convenience overpowers genuine desire to change something and aaa
@thermia afaik they are working on “improving” the system so it’s not so easily fooled. also a lot of folks aren’t gonna be that savvy and will just cough up that sensitive information
@thermia they’re doing some “teen council” pr stunt where they get 9 ppl to give them input on whatever but the process there is kinda like applying for a job (there’s literally an interview involved) and the criteria are completely unknown so it looks like they’re gonna pick out the most generic npcs available thatll nod along to everything so they can say “look how much we’re listening to our users” while doing the most horrendously evil shit imaginable. someone’s gonna fall for that though for sure
@noisytoot @wiki not the freenode sovereign state thing again 😭
@thermia an argument I've heard before though is that if they find out you circumvented their system, they can just ban you without warning, too. :/
