Can anyone recommend an S3 service compatible with Sharkey for using as media storage?
Ideally, I’m looking for something relatively inexpensive, but performant enough that it doesn’t look like you’re trying to load images with a dial-up connection. Also something not based in the US.
I can keep bumping up the storage of the VHD, but I’d rather be burning up my SSD’s write cycles on the database instead of media.
i’m using Upcloud for object storage and can confirm that it works for at least the most of Fediverse software (tested on Sharkey, both Iceshrimps and Owncast), it’s even compatible with AWS’ CLI tool
there’s no storage limit but every 250 GB will cost 5$ a month (so <=250 GB is 5$, <=500 GB is 10$ and so on), and also there’s no traffic limit for object storage specifically afaik
even though there were outages overall at Upcloud i don’t think i was ever affected by them
@link Holy shit, that’s super reasonable! Thank you, I’ll look into them! My entire Sharkey instance and OS is around 100GB used right now, coming up on two months live, so I could see it staying at $5 for a while. ^.^
@maddy is so weird seeing more and more people being like “nothing US based please.”
Not because I disagree, it’s just that I’m stuck in the US living through this shit and it’s crazy seeing so many people being anti-US tech for completely sensible reasons.
oh, and keep in mind that there are no tools to migrate old media from local storage to S3 and i don’t know if someone has ever done that (i’m sure though that’s it’s doable with manual uploading of the media and some database shenanigans)
@maddy I’ve had good experience with Hetzner’s object storage, but haven’t really tried anything else.
@maddy since i decided to hide my stuff behind cloudflare, I opted to use their R2 storage for Sharkey and it seems to be working good. No costs so far 🤞
