…but would an Oracle free-tier VPS survive a sodiboost/yasboost/catsalad boost? neofox_think_googly

@maddy I've been wondering about using one of those to host a Minecraft server for two or three people.... it's Oracle so it should run Java stuff well, right?

@Canageek I can tell you that it will run Java.

Honestly, I’m sure it would be fine for something low demand, but the relatively low amount of RAM provided can be a problem.

@vavency @yassie_j Oh gosh, this instance isn’t hosted on one of them.

I’m considering starting a(nother) new one to try it though. neofox_devil

@maddy @yassie_j Well, that’ll be fun to see how it will crash and burn. ak_yvonne_giggle

@maddy a boost from them can also kill your instance. just like catsalad or stux

@Erpel OH, are you referring to Puniko?

@maddy

i once had an Akkoma (and then i switched to Pleroma) instance which was hosted on Lenovo ThinkCentre with dual-core Celeron, 8 GB of DDR3 and 16 GB of M.2 SATA SSD

it was like this the whole time and when a big account boosted a post, the instance wouldn’t load at all lmao

@link OOF neofox_googly_shocked
Those older Celerons really aren’t good for much of anything modern.

@maddy my rpi before would die often when a post would get popular, or when I tried to load the emoji list

@lunya The I/O of that poor SD card just chugging neofox_laugh

@maddy I had an M.2 on an RPi5 but it was mostly bottlenecked by RAM (since I had 8GB RAM model before 16GB models were made available)

@lunya Oh wow, it chugged even then? I’m surprised by that!

@maddy it also probably chugged because of my internet, I live in an area where 50mbps is fastest

@lunya Ooh, that’s rough. >.< Could be!

This instance is running on a 2-core VM with 4GB of RAM and mirrored NVMe storage. The network connection is also 1000/500, so shouldn’t be much of a bottleneck there. I haven’t run into anything that brings it screeching to a halt… yet!

@maddy

that Pleroma is still around btw, though i rehosted it in my new server

the ThinkCentre is now hosting a website for my friend

@maddy I almost always have my internet maxed out, my server is a custom build with Ryzen 9 5900XT and 32 GB of RAM, built shortly before the RAM prices went very high

It runs anything I throw on it completely fine (obviously), the only bottleneck is the network which stays almost always at 100% usage, and I can feel it if webpages don’t load

@lunya Yeeeesh, that really sucks about your Internet connection. neofox_x_x Your server is otherwise pretty beastly!

@maddy ARM? Probably yes. x86? Probably not.

@maddy @Canageek The ARM ones can have up to 24GB RAM

@noisytoot @maddy The question is will Minecraft run in their version of Java? I have heard that it's a little weird

@Canageek @maddy It's just a normal aarch64 VPS (I think the choices of distro are Oracle Linux and Ubuntu but you can apparently use netboot.xyz and replace it with something else), so the question is if Minecraft runs on aarch64.
