i'd probably block people more often if fedi didn't have this stupid culture around it. everyone assumes that blocking implies like, strong feelings, and some get upset and think it's unjustified, while others celebrate or whatever. like, no. a mute is a shadowban, so a block is much more humane. you probably just posted misinformation or something annoying, i don't want to see any more of that on my tl. i'm actually less likely to block someone i have any kind of strong feelings about.

@ww A block isn’t necessarily known to the blockee either, since some servers don’t federate Block activities and according to the spec the server SHOULD NOT notify the blockee anyway (although it is certainly more detectable than a mute)

@noisytoot i never understood the non-federated blocks, cause why not just mute people instead. the only difference is that people blocked that way can't follow you, otherwise it's the exact same as a mute.
