A hint of my new portable "full workstation" computing setup featuring the MNT Pocket Reform. First the glowy pic!
All this packs up and fits in the front pouch of my backpack.
And here's what it looks like with lights on. You can also see @mlemweb's dollhouse making activities left on the desk.
The portable monitor and stand, the keyboard, and the MNT Pocket Reform all fit nicely in the front pocket of my backpack allowing for a full ergonomic dual screen setup which I can pull out anywhere. The pocket's trackball itself acts as an easy to access mouse.
Additionally, with this setup, if *not* going full workstation, I can just use the Pocket by itself!
I took these pictures in a hurry, I plan on taking better looking ones later before I write a blogpost if I can, but I took these in a hurry last night and kinda wanted to post them
@cwebber What portable monitor is that? I never heard of portable monitors. :D
@josch INGNOK YN02D 15.6" FHD Portable Monitor with Adjustable Stand https://www.ingnok.ca/products/ingnok-yn02d-15-6-fhd-portable-monitor-with-adjustable-stand
It's shockingly inexpensive, light, and both the monitor and stand fold up in my backpack very easily! I would really recommend it!
@cwebber Shiny!
I just ordered a Voyager keyboard of my own, so it's good to see it in use by somebody like you.
@cwebber Ooooh okay and then I see you found a super short micro hdmi to hdmi cable and another super short hdmi to mini hdmi cable. :D And power is via usb-c. Too bad we cannot have video over usb-c... :(
@cwebber
How do you like the ZSA Voyager as a programming keyboard so far, in particular for using within Emacs?
I am looking for a split keyboard and like the concept, I am just unsure whether I can deal with the reduced number of keys 😹
I guess it takes a fair amount of customization?
@cwebber Quite interesting. Also curious about the portability factor. Look forward to seeing/reading more.
@noisytoot @mlemweb quite usable for trips! ergonomically I wouldn't want to use it for super long, but I have done a lot on it in this form factor
@hanno @cwebber I'm a Vim user and love mine. Absolutely something you customize the heck out of, but people share public layouts with walkthrough tours that you can browse and use as starting points. Dual-function keys (tap for X, hold for Ctrl) go a long way; beyond that, with enough layers, all things are possible (I have one just for tmux). Check out Ben Vallack on YouTube for some interesting theory.
@spacehobo @cwebber It had better be - this is a Linux-only environment, at least until I start mixing BSD in here.
There's a Chromium-based browser app (Orux), and one that can be installed on Linux as well as the other two.
That looks absolutely sweet!
May I ask, the Pocket Reform - in terms of performance for general stuff (browsing, word processing) would you compare it as "doable" or more akin to "zippy"?
I am potentially in the market for a new treat for myself and I have been eyeing them for a bit. I would not be using it for heavy gaming/rendering etc. but light weight stuff (maybe some coding etc.)
Appreciate any information you're willing to share (or point me towards)
@Aprazeth With the RK3588 board, especially if you get the 32gb of ram version, the Pocket is really nice for pretty much everthing except certain newer opengl/vulkan-using things (blender)!
That actually sounds really positive. Thank you for the information, much appreciated!
@Aprazeth If you get a new one, you'll also be having the advantage that several lessons have been learned and are in a better state off the bat. The newer backplate fixed heating issues, and the rk3588 is a much better board than the original one
@Aprazeth of course the nice thing about the Pocket is that those with the older ones were still able to upgrade to the newer fixes incrementally :)
@cwebber
All I am hearing are positives :)
Comes out to below 1500 as I specced it, so I will think about that a bit - but a bit more informed now :)
Not too long because memory prices of course :*(
@cwebber That's really cool. What's the performance like on the Pocket?
I'm also curious about the monitor, what is it?
@cwebber
Well, guess who ordered one?
Thank you again for the time you took, it is very much appreciated!
@cwebber ooh that's a good idea. I have most of these, so I'm tempted to try it. What kind of monitor stand are you using?
@paul using this monitor which came with its own stand! www.ingnok.ca/products/ingnok-yn02d-15-6-fhd-portable-monitor-with-adjustable-stand
@cwebber Fits in the front pouch of what backpack? (Why I ask: Lately I'm becoming a backpack nerd.)
@greghendershott Some kinda Swiss Gear Airflow backpack I have had for years now
