choose your laptop brand

 • framework: forum moderation is bad, paid some infamous racists a few hundred bucks
 • most other brands: directly funds the military industrial complex

@otter @MarkAssPandi I mean I use a framework laptop 16. sure they did some shitty stuff but on the grand scale it’s not nearly as bad as the competitors

@root @MarkAssPandi it does, APU != integrated graphics

@otter @root Isn’t APU technically a type of Integrated Graphics?
Just more powerful than regular ones?

@root tbh this is ignoring the fact that a lot of the hardware gets sourced from the same manufacturers anyway (i.e. intel or amd for x86 cpus)

@zaki you don’t really have a choice when it comes to hardware
you do when it comes to the laptop brand

re: framework drama, uspol

@root i suppose you do, though the effect of such a decision is very much limited, given that they all depend on the very same hardware (that’s the point i’m tryna drive home yeha)

@root @otter well still its more powerful and works with helldiver 2 from what I’ve seen (it is deemed as ā€œplayableā€, tho has to change default graphics settings lol) so its cool still neodog_angel

@root Also as far as I can tell, the sponsoring is ā€œlimitedā€ to framework sending them laptops for said racists to test their distros on. Still not good, but it feels less bad to me than just sending money their way

@root @MarkAssPandi its so fucking funny how badly it runs, switching to Linux fixed one issue (audio stuttering) and added about 2 others (more game stuttering, now with mid-mission crashes!)

@root it does strike me as a little funny at times when people are talking about trying to go for different brands or even replace the framework hardware they already have

Like,,, what other brands? HP?

And trying to replace an existing computer, in the process giving a bunch more money to Intel (BDS), AMD (BDS), NVIDIA (comparably evil), etc etc feels like a poorly thought out solution

@mossfet @root I’d argue it’s talked about because it’s the high end brand for once

@natty @root i think to some extent framework is being held to a higher standard because its seen of as sort of an "in-community" brand

@mossfet @natty @root yeah, they built their entire userbase out of autistic queers, claiming how they are all progressive, and then… lol

while with big brands it was never really in question

see also: raspberry pi - similarly built up a lot of goodwill being an underdog and then blew it all on hiring that cop neocat_googly_woozy

@natty @root @mossfet that’s not to say they were actually good, obv it’s just a marketing tactic, but I mean they did build up a lot of goodwill regardless, so people are more upset about them blowing it than about, idk, apple donating to trump

@alice @natty @root I'm not even sure I would go as far as to say "built their community on autistic queers"

The Framework community has a much larger base than queers (most Framework owners are not queer), and I doubt they've marketed towards queers in particular.

@mossfet @natty @root they did not market towards queers, it’s just that it happens to appeal to a very specific kind of person - same as old thinkpads for example

@alice @natty @root i mean, "capitalize on it" in the sense that we bought their laptops. I wouldn't say that's capitalizing on queerness any more than like, my landlord capitalises on queerness by renting a flat to three trans women.

Anyway this isn't a hill I'm particularly bothered to die on - they're just another somewhat reactionary hardware company
