chat is it weird to bring a GPS receiver on an airplane?
I really donβt like being in a tin can hurtling through the sky at a large speed, with no phone signal, or idea of where we are. I like the idea of knowing where we are. But I also remember when I tried GPS app on my phone, I could not get a satellite fix. I wonder if my ublox modules would also not get a fix. Well, probably whatever I build them with wonβt fly past security anyways π
i think bringing the Good GPS Antenna would be:
a) too big
b) too weird
i have two. one is big hockey puck, the other is half-egg/forbidden buttplug.
@0x47df I have held a GPS fix for the duration of a LCY-AMS flight before, by making sure I got it while the plane was still on the ground
@eta maybe that is the tactic, Iβm just not sure if my poor phone battery could sustain this
@0x47df @eta as someone who does this all of the time, If you have a window seat, you can almost [*] get a fix if you put your phone up against the window for ~20 seconds, even if state is reasonably cold.
[*] The only place where this didnt work was the suwalki gap, because of Russian jamming, On the way back I held a GPS lock from ground to past the suwalki gap, but it was extremely marginal.
Maybe the new dreamliners (or w/e the one with with the e-window shades) mess with this, but it's worked for 90%+ of the flights I've taken in the last 4 years
@0x47df Bring a sextant, youll be so busy pissing about with maths there will be no time to worry about flying
@en4rab i think visibility might be a larger problem
@0x47df If GPS wont work you could get a decent ADS-B signal and just use the planes GPS by proxy
