Does your ISP provide you with email service?

@evan yes, but they started turning it off if you don't actively use it ;) (xfinity/comcast)

@evan I get my inetrnet from a neighborhood mesh network so while the ISP technically has email available, I do not use it (and I don't think any of us do).

@evan Needs a "… probably…???" option.

@jessamyn @evan Many years ago, home.net or something like that folded suddenly. Shaw used them for all of their customer's email. It was all lost entirely. I said never again and got my own domain.

@evan

The MPAQ ISP doesn't even allow website service. They blocked everything 😡😭

@evan double checked out of curiosity they are supporting the legacy emails that seem to still be around but they aren't offering new email accounts.

Great question

@evan
...no, and I wouldn't use it if they did. Jeeze. Who wants an email address that you lose if you ever terry a better deal with another internet provider?

@evan

In theory I have e-mail service. I would no more trust it than I trust their DNS to not spy on me.

But, being old, I still use a dozen or more e-mail addresses, one of which I do not host.

@evan Yes but it's actually Google. Personally I wish ISPs didn't provide email services as it's a form of lock in. Hard to bail on your provider to a better service if you have to move your email and all the things tied to it at the same time.

@evan Yes, but... I would never in a million years use it and have never activated it.

@evan Yes, but to set it up, you must call the ISP and tell the nice person over the phone which username and password you wish to have.

@evan Yes, but I don't use it. I have my own mail server longer than I have this ISP.

@evan I assume Xfinity does have still provide email accounts but I've never used them.

@evan no, they do provide an email service but you have to pay for it separately and I don't

@evan

Yes, but I don't use it. I think it's a 1GB account and they use IceWarp.

@evan
Are there ISPs that don't? I mean, I haven't used the ISP email since Gmail then my own domain, but I assumed they all still did.

@evan

That era has passed for me. I don't think I've had email from my ISP since I was on Earthlink.

@evan I'm asserting that all do. I haven't checked mine (was Shaw, now Rogers) since I first signed up but I'm assuming they do.

So I answered Yes, but... I don't use it because I don't want to be tied to them.

@virtuous_sloth also, when you assert, you make an ass out of e and rt.

@evan Yes. But it sucks. And we have a household of people (well, we did) and I get one att.net email box.

@bplein how does it suck? It's email!

@evan Yes, but I got burned by using a provider email in the nineties after moving to a different country. Never again.

@evan
You know, I don't actually know? I've used standalone email services since 1996ish. I kept a Cogeco ISP account for a while, but after I switched providers I just haven't thought about it.

@silvermoon82 me either! I have three ISPs and checked them all before doing this poll.

@evan
Turns out, they do!

I don't think Virgin Mobile does, though. So one of two?

@evan Yes, but I've been hosting my own email since 1998, and have never relied on ISP provided mail addresses for anything other than communcation with the ISP.

@evan Well, if I don’t use it or have to check it, it’s fine. 😜

@silvermoon82 @evan raising a hand for @ServerNorth - we offer it!

Uptake is around 3%, but for comparison IPv6 demand is less than 0.25%

We even have a couple e-mail-only clients who need something fully patriated. Only out-of-Canada stuff we have is redundant DNS, and FreshBooks (maybe they’re still in Q9?)

@mWare @evan @ServerNorth
Yeah, I could see “your data doesn’t leave Canada” being a growing selling point these days! That was one thing $lastjob was really trying to capitalize on, was data sovereignty.

@silvermoon82 @mWare @evan @ServerNorth I hosted a news outlet's email for 15 years or so. Their website was in the US, but all email stayed here, and when the data centre I was using got acquired by a US firm, we moved everything.

Then the editor retired and the new one didn't seem to think it was important, so they moved to Google for Business.

Now it's not only "your data doesn't leave" but "is your entire corporate structure resistant to US incursion?" It's good of Microsoft to make their position on this clear, because it's been one hell of a wake-up call for both government and corporations.

@alan @silvermoon82 @evan @ServerNorth and you haven’t even yet invoked the modern blight of training LLMs on an entire hosterʼs email corpus.

@evan Yes, Yahoo mail! Doubt anyone uses that or even aware.

@evan Yes, but I run my own mail server since 20 years and have switched ISPs at least 5 times in that time.

@evan Do they provide ME with them? No.

Do they provide SOME PEOPLE with five email addresses and a shitty web front end with minimal spam filtering? I hear it rumored.

@evan Yes, but. A) I don't actually use it, and 2) They are discontinuing it for all new users, and closing the service for anyone who doesn't use it. I was going to allow them to close mine, but then decided to request they keep it open. I still don't really use it, but they aren't going to lower my bill if they close it.

Hey, thanks for all the responses. I am yes, but only one of three (two terrestrial, one wireless).

The two others stopped in the last few years.
