So almost a year after scouring Japan's excellent selection of sticker shops, I have finally got around to decking out my Linux laptop (machine name: Anthy) with a sticker selection I'm happy with. I am not good at "arts and crafts" so please clap.

I was very happy with how I was able to find a set of stickers that lines up so well with themes that are meaningful to me (girls made of fog; a pink haired girl comforting a dark haired girl; purple, in general).

There *is* a blank space in the bottom right I can't figure out what to do with (the Anthy sticker came in a taller size, and I wish I'd bought it. It's also too bad, for a gray BG, that the two "manga" stickers turned out to be transparent; I didn't realize it until I'd unpeeled them

@mcc looking excellent, good selection.

Separately, proud for myself that I can read 大丈夫

… wait. Wait. No. Ohnoohnoohno. I did this last night and didn't post the pictures until this morning. And just now I opened the laptop and I realized.

I am an idiot. I am an actual idiot.

@mcc its just a tableau for you and you alone

@emaytch I'm gonna have to decide how I feel about that. Or else run down to the store and buy some paste.

@mcc don't think of it as "I put my stickers on backwards" think of it as "bit flip caused the frame buffer to draw upside down"

@mcc I feel like "Oriented for me when I look at the laptop with the lid closed" is as valid a sticker orientation as "oriented for you when you look at it while I'm using the laptop". 🤷🏻

@mcc can you pass on any info about the girl with the black ball of teeth for a face? I absolutely love that design.

@mcc why are all the stickers upside down /o\

@mcc Thanks for the chuckle. Now when anyone asks, deadpan:
- My world is upside down right now.
- I have those upside down glasses.
- What makes you think your up is my up?
- I'll turn your world upside down so you'll finally see things my way.

@mcc D:

semi related, if you know a good way to get stickers off a laptop (got one from a friend with wildly different tastes) without using a heatgun, I'd love to hear it!

@mcc looks great and completely valid. I'd probably do it that way too lol.

@mcc I didn’t know they made laptops in Australia!

@mcc I've never put a sticker on my laptop, in part because I always wondered about exactly this.

@JennCutter @mcc as I said elsethread, if they’re good-quality vinyl stickers, I’ve had good luck just peeling them off. If they’re not, and you don’t want to reuse them, I swear by this stuff. Get the spritz bottle and a plastic razor blade

@mcc What does it indicate, them being made of fog or only silhouettes? Is there a name for this?

@shufei I don't know. The Utena stuff is trying to look like 19th century silhouette portraits. I think the transparent-sticker artist is trying to represent diassociation or something.

@mcc take a photo and get a vinyl cover printed then cover the whole thing with it - this has the added benefit of being super meta

@mcc but when you shut the lid the stickers are the right way, mine are all upside down

@mcc if they’re good-quality vinyl stickers I’ve had good luck carefully peeling them off and repositioning them

@mcc I was wondering if there is a “fog girl” genre… What do you enjoy about it, though; how does it speak to you?

@mcc @JennCutter I’d worry about the exacto blade marring the finish and recommend the plastic razor blade instead, but either way I’ll be curious to hear how it goes

@mcc Stickers are for you when the lid is closed and device is next to you. Everyone else can enjoy their own stickers!

@mcc Welp, I guess you're just going to have to learn to use your laptop upside down.

@mcc they are just oriented for the castle in the sky.

@mcc I feel your pain. I have also done this once. I can now never apply stickers unless the laptop is open and the back of its lid is facing me while I do it

@mcc add some space program logos and some of that yellow/black caution tape then say it's a bit

@glyph @mcc I've seen mentions of first applying clear vinyl to back of laptop. While it doesn't help fix this (or does it?), it would help to clean up.

@mcc the stickers aren't upside down, the logo is upside down (older thinkpads had the logo the other way round)

@mcc it's consistent. That's the only thing that matters

@viq @mcc I typically use a hard case, but those are extremely hard to come by for non-macbooks.

@mcc between this and your blue clothes strat, it makes me want to be more deliberate about color coordination it looks really good!

@mcc reminds me of when I was a little kid and had a bedspread with characters on it (maybe Richard Scarry’s characters), and tried to figure out whether it was weirder to have the characters the same way around as me and therefore sortof facing away from me, or to have them the other way round and facing toward me

@JennCutter @kevinriggle @mcc

Taking dealer decals off a car works with an old credit card rather than a blade. 🤷‍♂️

@mayintoronto @mcc if the super-genius designers at apple did it, no one’s an idiot, it just happens even to the best of us:
