If you use Git via HTTPs and get rate-limited now, please provide feedback to us about your usage. Also, feel free to use SSH or extend your usage of caching, if possible.

Today, we're struggling under the load of excessive Git cloning of all repos, and we have made the hard decision to restrict these operations for all users.

Your code is free and libre, but not for sale to large actors.

@lax I do not know packwiz, but maybe it would be an option to use releases for this?
So when you tag something, let an ci runner run, who releases the needed data. To my knowledge, the access to releases is not ratelimited

@marlena @lax Releases come as a .zip file, not separate files though?

@Codeberg @bob

Running your own service would take a load off Codeberg ... From what I've seen they are good but running your own systems like the Fediverse and XMPP spreads the load around.

I've often thought about using Codeberg for my TidySearch but with GitHub selling out to Microsoft moving off that is putting a heavy work load on others.

One of the MPAQ servers is a laptop running Beamship, and another is a simple everyday desktop that I would estimate for about $500 with a 100TB HD as a 2nd drive.

@Codeberg

There is a fire in the Github theatre, and everyone is scrambling to the exit. They must be patient, they will get there.

@Codeberg I never used SSH for git because (unless there's something I don't know about) that won't work with an HTTP(s) proxy / some firewalls. Also, git via HTTP(s) works pretty well anyways. I think the only time I've had issues with it was when I was on really slow (less than 1mbps) internet.

@justbob @Codeberg

I just keep thinking back to the BBS days and how not one person/service but multiple servers.

Not one person/company covering coasts all alone, spreading it around

Then there is the fact that data is so spread out, it makes it harder for a government to shut it down and silence We The People

@Codeberg I’ve always used SSH for any Git service. Gives me access to my private repos and orgs.

I’ll only ever not use SSH if I’m on a system where I cannot use my SSH key or if I’m lazy.

@Codeberg Thank you for fighting for all of us while we wait for federation and de-centralisation. It's the only hope we have of becoming too big a target to tear down through such campaigns and AI scraping.

@Codeberg Really shocking to see how some threat actors are exploiting other people’s work and make everyone’s life harder in the process.
