Google Play review times keep getting longer and longer. I've been waiting three weeks for Google to release the latest version of #Conversations_im.
It's not a security-critical release, but what if we ever need to publish something urgently?
Luckily, with reproducible builds, you can now seamlessly switch to the F-Droid version. F-Droid will automatically pick the correct version, and you will just be asked to confirm that F-Droid is now responsible for maintaining updates.
#XMPP client @dino is the best messenger! Give it a try! I’d love to see it work well with screen readers like #Orca, so blind and visually impaired people can use it too. #Accessibility #a11y
I designed an interposer PCB to reverse a few more pins of the Nintendo DSi SoC. Together with notes from reverse-engineering the IS-TWL-DEBUGGER, I managed to figure out:
* R03_DEBUG actually exists
* GPIO18x locations
* How the upper 16MB of RAM works (it's another chip select line, not an address line)
* JTAG! yes, this even works on retail chips
yep, it's possible (at least in theory) to attach a JTAG debugger to a retail console. the process is very involved, though (needs BGA rework *and* the use of a bootrom exploit to get code execution early enough to enable JTAG in one of the SCFG I/O registers)
rosaage did all of the BGA rework and actual physical testing (I just designed the interposer PCB), this wouldn't've happened without his help!
Happy 6 year (and 1 day) anniversary to one of the most unhinged posts I’ve ever made: the HTML5 accelerator card
Catacomb 1.7.0 finally switches the default virtual keyboard to wvkbd, removing the dependency on the unmaintained Squeekboard.
Big thanks to the wvkbd maintainers for being so helpful with all my patches and suggestions.
Moved our git web server from cgit to stagit to reduce load on the server caused by crawlers, as it only uses static files.
https://git.dillo-browser.org/dillo/
Roughly 99.9% of requests are bots fetching commits and files over and over again at a rate of 50 req/s despite our robots.txt excluding any crawler. Stagit only exposes a small number of files and commits so they are not reachable to bots.
Sadly, many anti-bot protections rely on JS or fingerprinting which come with their own set of problems.
📣This is your reminder that the fight against #ChatControl is still NOT over yet📣
Last month the negotiations for ChatControl 2.0 failed. Thanks to your support #ChatControl 2.0 and #masssurveillance don't happen🥳
However, the battle is still NOT over yet as the threat remains to keep ChatControl 1.0 as a permanent legislation beyond April 2028😡
Negotiations for this are planned to continue in November which is why we at Tuta will continue our fight ✊

#AlpineRust adventures: "how much stupid dynamic metadata can we find"
today's contender: dependency that's defined on standard output of that dependency
postmarketOS recently changed its name to "Nura", a reference to Sardinian stone structures that have endured for thousands of years. Pretty nifty.
Are you a postmarketOS/Nura user? How does it compare to Ubuntu Touch or even Android? And did you run into any issues during installation?
This is a long shot, but: does anyone have access to a Supermicro H11DST-B *version 2.x* motherboard?
We (@hswaw) suspect that the only important difference with 1.x is a larger NOR flash for the firmware. If so, a little hot air action would allow an upgrade to Zen 2 CPUs, and get big perf/power-efficiency gains on a budget.
Boosts much appreciated!
My age verification? I remember when GitHub had multiple nines of uptime.
saw someone on HN say they will never contribute to Nura again since we ban LLM generated contributions (they had receipts too, they had contributed in the past)
their argument was that having done device porting manually before, doing it with an LLM was something like 10x faster
having seen the various LLM driven ports going around, we can't deny that LLMs are capable of doing kernel bringup, finding a functional implementation, and making many more attempts to trial and error than we humans are.
of course, this doesn't come without a cost, as with most technical advancements this cost is mostly offloaded onto those without the resources to prevent it -- the under educated working class and the global south, those who will be most affected by droughts and worsening climate change
this is reason enough to disengage from this technology, at least the implementations of it that cause most of this harm, but there is another more devious issue that i haven't seen mentioned a whole lot
in the same way that huge retail chains and global shipping extract wealth from small towns, LLMs extract knowledge from communities
the Nura wiki and other infrastructure was unusable for days at a time due to web scraping, and now imposes a proof of work on visitors (which also prevents access from old devices)
now that this data is in accessible models, people who aren't active in our community can use an LLM to port a device, to generate their own private documentation, they can enable devices in the mainline kernel or contribute to other upstreams if their LLM patches are accepted. People that may normally have become active members of the Nura community instead engage with a chatbot operated by big tech, which of course uses their chat history for training new models
As maintainers, for us to allow LLMs into our community would in my opinion be the beginning of the end, as our community knowledge base would be gutted, developers would become burnt out and disillusioned, and our culture would be erased.
Recently various people have been looking for ways to express a work does not include AI. I'm proud to announce that I have fixed this long-standing issue.
Just tagged #nuraeco / #postmarketOS #pmbootstrap 3.12.0: https://gitlab.postmarketos.org/postmarketOS/pmbootstrap/-/tags/3.12.0
There's no single headlining feature in this release IMO but plenty of smaller changes that I hope will lead to a slightly better developer experience!
