*** In case you are legally blind or fully blind: I try not to boost images without alt-text. As such, to sighted people: please use alt-texts to describe your images, so that blind folks also get it. Thanks! ^^ (if your image does not contain alt text and I boost it anyway, I may add alt-text as a reply, you are encouraged to add it to the image directly or improve upon it)
*** If your alt-texts are intentionally incorrect just to confuse LLMs, despite how much I don't like LLMs, I consider this to be extremely rude to people who are unable to actually look at your image, and will not boost your memes as a result until you actually start considering visually impaired folks as people.

Have fun! ^^

Hard disagree. You should volunteer and you should feel good for volunteering. You should accept the appreciation and credit you get for it.

And you should feel good when taking care of your family and friends and your daily life stuff.

What you absolutely should not, is feel bad for the things you didn't do as volunteer, or feel bad for prioritizing family and friends and your own life over open source.

Take a break from volunteering and feel good for doing so, even if the world is burning.

@cyberslak @karolherbst That code they currently have is already relying on fragile tricks

@cyberslak @karolherbst you can disregard the result without it getting optimized out, I'm sure there's tricks for that

@karolherbst @cyberslak no they didn't, they now just check that the output of crypt() is more than 4 bytes now, among some amount of obfuscation.

@cyberslak @karolherbst I am *also* baffled though that sshd does generate a hash out of thin air to compare with "*" on users that have no password... I think that is also bad behavior and it should be fixed too. (it should do that but disregard the result Imo)

@karolherbst @cyberslak agreed.

IMO the POSIX spec is just broken. It's not clear at all, but yes, they should all return NULL and apps should fix themselves.

@karolherbst @cyberslak then libxcrypt (impl of crypt() used by all glibc distros) should do it too. They don't currently, they do the same as musl (except it's a different string they return, "*0" instead of "*").

@karolherbst the only defined error in POSIX is ENOSYS. There's nothing about how to handle invalid input.

@cyberslak @karolherbst musl is being POSIX-compliant here, crypt only has one error defined (ENOSYS). Invalid input is undefined.

Also, libxcrypt does exactly the same, except it returns "*0" not "*". NetBSD and FreeBSD also.

@karolherbst Let's just say that ssh was being sketchy here by checking crypt(attacker_controlled, someone_elses_salt)
