As such, to sighted people: please use alt-texts to describe your images, so that blind folks also get it. Have fun! ^^

AI, discourse

RE: https://zeroes.ca/@VeeRat/116603185859484562

The issue I'm seeing is, that criticizing AI for the harm it does equals criticizing a good friend of some and their natural reaction are along the lines of "they are a good person who help me a lot! It can't be!" and it becomes impossible to talk about it, because many, for that reason alone, just don't want to.

And yeah, those AI companies totally exploit this on purpose, I have no doubts about them knowing exactly what they are doing there.

@eloy I actually think this is good. This is good because it can remind people that forgot to disclose they used AI to disclose it ("oh hey there's no AI-Assisted trailer")

That said accepting AI contributions in the first place is a bad move in itself :\

Be me

Get in a convo about trying to run a mainline-first UI in downstream Android kernel

Realise that almost none of my devices that can run pmOS actually run a downstream kernel in pmOS

A blessing and a curse :P

Bambu Lab, uspol/legal system, wtf?
Show content
So Bambu Lab, a Chinese company, filed a DMCA (US law) against a Polish developer who... lives in Poland.
Isn't this simply... bullshit? Why would an European developer have to care about some law in the US?

I really don't understand that logic, so I hope someone can explain neocat_googly

2 weeks ago I gave a talk about postmarketOS at the spring NLUUG (Netherlands Unix Users Group) conference.

It's in English so should be accessible to all!

@jarkko @ljs the main issue in many cases isn't so much about doing the thing, it's doing the thing *well*

@ljs Long before AI, while i was doing some stuff for Nokia, we sometimes had to make PoC's look worse so that some random manager would not think that the product is complete. And now it's like... well, you know how it is like.

Further, I've never been in a project, worked on an upstream open source project feature, or anything, where initial the building of "the thing" would have taken more than a few weeks. After that follows countless months of tuning, adjusting and most importantly discussing with other people about the nuts and bolts.

IMHO, the bubble in AI is really related the misconception that building some functional version of software would be the main contributing cost factor for shipping quality software.

I spent my time trying to make it better. Not just write code, but find better or at least different ways to do so. Simpler, cleaner, more general, more comprehensible.

What's happening to day is a complete repudiation of everything I was trying to achieve.

We wanted to get rid of the hard coded users in our nightly image builds so we added a small first-boot app that allows to configure the language, on-screen keyboard layout and user. For that we split some widgets out of mobile settings and @rudraps added #rust bindings for it.

@craftyguy @oausi @postmarketOS

I think this comment is also a very good opportunity to post https://postmarketos.org/state/ again.

A community of volunteers identified an issue on Friday night and got it fixed in under 24h. Honestly, kudos to everybody involved. Anybody thinking such community of volunteers funded by donations that cover an absolutely tiny fraction of the work done (yet are critical for the sustainability of the project) should not be allowed to make mistakes is in my opinion, breaching the social contract under which the work is done.

I think I found a new funny way to wisely spend your time.
