it is quite funny how standards that you have to pay for are considered open standards
like sure, they're not restricted by patents but if the standard costs over 200 GBP to purchase the text of, does that really matter
that probably makes webp the most commonly used free lossy image format (since it makes use of vp8, which is freely available, unlike jpeg? ISO is charging money for access to the jpeg standard, in any case, unsure if it's officially published anywhere else for free)

@5225225 JPEG is also an ITU-T standard, a copy of which is freely available from the W3C
JPEG XL, however, I haven’t been able to find even a draft of. Which is a shame since it’s otherwise probably the best image format
