doing the dialect quiz as a Bri’ish person is fun
New England dialect found to be most similar to Old England dialect (sample size of 1)
Where would the data be to make one of these for British English … gosh, I heard of so many attempts at new dialect surveys for England but did any of them ever complete?
Question 1: Father and farther
[ ] are pronounced the same
[ ] are pronounced differently
Question 2: The vowel at the end of ‘happy’
[ ] [ɛ] like in ‘fed’
[ ] [ɪ] like in ‘fit’
[ ] [iː] like in ‘feet’
(extra advanced option: distinguish between the somewhat risibly notated [ĭː] as in ‘feet’ and the [iː] as in ‘feed’. I’m not sure what this would tell you and it might make the question too hard for lay people anyway)
