"... Intel Corporation, a partially state-owned enterprise with extensive links to the United States Republican Party and its armed wing, Department of War..."
@whitequark this but unironically
@whitequark which, for the record, nobody should ever have been okay with. it shouldn't have gotten big enough for that kind of thing to happen in the first place.
@whitequark quoting gamers nexus i see
@whitequark gawd yes, this really should be done more often
@whitequark From Al Jazeera:
"the United States, a troubled, oil-rich former British colony with a history of political violence"
@whitequark "Amazon, a logistics and data-infrastructure conglomerate, with extensive US political ties, provides US government intelligence and law-enforcement agencies with cloud services critical to state surveillance and military operations. Critics argue the company functions as an unofficial extension of government capacity, blurring the line between private enterprise and state power.”
@whitequark at the risk of sounding like bullshit tankies we should do this more often, i wonder what this would be like for other companies like mcdonalds
@whitequark lmao im just now seeing the gamers nexus yt vid that mentions this, i didnt realize how much of a one for one quote this is
@whitequark Can we start actually doing this? I mean like, specifically because of how much overreach we're seeing by this administration, and how much of it is caused by the corporate ties to Trump.
@whitequark
United States regime
@whitequark they’re basically a government run business at this point. they were failing before getting tens of billions of dollars in govt subsidies. if not for that they’d either be circling the drain or purchased by broadcom or smth

@jiub @whitequark the govt literally owns part of intel though: https://www.intc.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/1748/intel-and-trump-administration-reach-historic-agreement-to
Under the terms of today’s announcement, the government agrees to purchase 433.3 million primary shares of Intel common stock at a price of $20.47 per share, equivalent to a 9.9 percent stake in the company.
US Government owns 9.9% of INTC.
@ada @whitequark true, i forgot about that
i was thinking of how biden gave them tens of billions to pretend to build a fab in ohio
I could make an argument that chip design and fab is a pretty horrendously expensive industry to R&D and build. And leaving all chip fab production to Taiwan and China puts us at some pretty serious supply chain risks in case of geopolitical conflict, as it would take many years to try and rebuild that infrastructure on our own.
If it was managed by Congressional approval to support vital infrastructure, along with an inspector general office, same as we do with many critical industries - I.e. the Ag bill for farming, and the program is open to any corporations that meet a standard for critical hardware technology, I wouldn't be opposed philosophically. Add in things like wind farm components or battery tech or solar panel tech for green energy. Leaving everything to the free market is part of how we ended up in this mess of globalization supply chains in the first place with overly short sided thinking.
