@thing I’ve been using fastfetch for a good while. It can look just like hyfetch if you want it to

@thing this really isnt that bad imo? but im also just generally not as morally outraged at AI as everyone else seems to be so

@thing like. every idiot could have submitted bad PRs even without AI, maintainers ALWAYS have to check if the code is BS, AI really doesnt change that?

@ixhby @thing i agree actually i hadn’t read that blog post. i think ai generated code is crInge anyway buuut it’s definitely a lot better if it’s reviewed like a pull request. fluxer did this as well (though i think they wanna replace the ai generated code)

@ixhby @thing i mean “not strictly against” doesnt always mean “complete slop”
“quality requirements will remain the same, use what you want” and “ai is a tool, but human direction is still needed” really isn’t that terrible, even if i might not agree it doesnt discredit the software or its devolopers imo.
certainly better than “i asked claude and he wasn’t so happy {…}” in a pr reply from a lead maintainer lol

@thing fastfetch, and keepassxc still works fine for me but theres also gnome secrets. no clue how much ai is used there, ik the gnome project has mixed takes tho and it varies by app.

Funnily enough, the JSONC does not validate the RGB color specification, even tho there clearly is support for it.

@starlight I don’t, but will soon.
besides, i can adapt these configurations to other distros because i can read nix :3

@harlow @thing please use a free software license rather than that self-written proprietary license, there are several problems with it:

  • the restriction on using it for AI training is a restriction of freedom 0 (and probably pointless since AI training is usually just ignoring copyright and claiming it’s fair use anyway, and fair use cannot be restricted by a copyright license)
  • the requirement to report bugs in unmodified code to the original author also restricts freedom 0 and fails the DFSG island test (what if you’re on a desert island with no internet connection and can’t report bugs?)
  • not having the license in the same repo makes it unclear which version applies, if you ever update it, or if someone finds the hfetch repo separately from the one with the license
  • your warranty disclaimer doesn’t have “to the extent permitted by applicable law” or similar, which makes it illegal in Australia (although many free software licenses (notably MIT/Expat) also have the same problem, see this for an explanation)

@thing @harlow if it’s just the changelog then it seems fine to continue using, just don’t read the changelog and use git log instead

@noisytoot @harlow I just…
I just don’t want any AI involvement. At all.

@noisytoot @harlow hey.
it’s THEIR software. THEY get to decide what license to use it with.
If you don’t like the license, you can use something else.

@thing @noisytoot i actively avoided using a free license if by free you mean fsf free
i largely based this on the zlib license but it wasn’t clear enough
also by your logic use of zlib isn’t legal in au but i haven’t seen issues with that so i’ll keep doing what i’m doing

1

@thing @harlow as long as they don't accept AI-generated changes to the code you could fork and remove/revert the changelog

@thing @harlow of course, but that doesn't mean I can't ask them to use another license (which they can of course refuse to do)

(and my criticism did actually result in the requirement to report bugs on unmodified versions upstream being removed)

@noisytoot @thing i changed it to not being necessary to just being a thing you’re encouraged to do, i still don’t know why i left that as a logical contradiction

@harlow @thing yes, zlib has the same issue. it's probably fine, I'm not aware of it actually being enforced in the context of freely distributable software (but I'm also not australian or a lawyer)

@noisytoot @thing i haven’t seen it enforced so i see it as a non-issue
