@mcc A legitimate concern for celiacs and vegans.

@mcc

ok so vegan, sure, I can see that; there's various animal fats that are traditionally saponified for old-timey soaps so, even tho today's soap precursors are no longer usually animal derived, that one's quasi-reasonable I suppose.

but gluten....? in soap?

@mcc Tbh it's surprising how many products aren't vegan. Did you know toilet paper largely isn't vegan?

@mcc can gluten allergy also trigger on skin contact?

@mcc the vegan part makes me think of the shampoos that contain placenta

@mcc Guessing “vegan” is a proxy for cruelty-free. Gluten-free, though? Bizarre.

@4censord @mcc For people with celiac skin contact can super be a problem, yeah.

...that said, I've never heard of a hair product that involved wheat in any way?

@klara @mcc i've had shampoo that had some wheat-type plant extract as the extra "feature" of it
but yeah, that was the specialty of that one

@munin @mcc I GUESS because oats aren't unheard of in soap products, and oats=gluten-free? Stretching here, but it's the only thing I can imagine

@mcc reminds me of looking up some food to log yesterday and got hit with, "squid, boneless". They're all boneless!

@munin @mcc Bathory Body Works has too much perfume. I prefer Bathory's Bees.

@4censord @mcc As can the alpha-gal allergy, though Ithink that isn’t common. Wouldn’t be surprised if my daughter was, since she’s a bit vapor sensitive.

@mcc it's all chitin. They also have an internal rigid structure but it's also chitin.
Neat though https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1154117

@lynndotpy @mcc I didn't know this until now and I'm not sure what to do about it

@mcc

I kinda prefer that my bathing products not be carnivorous, since I'm made of meat and all.

No more Piranha solution for me, no ma'am!

@mcc To be fair, I've been surpirsed a few times to find out some random product I've been using for years turned out to have some ingredient in it made from dead animals. Sometimes they're even ingredients that actually can be made from plants, but I suppose it's cheaper to kill animals or something.

@noisytoot Bamboo toilet paper + a bidet, if possible. I bring my own toilet paper with me just for not wanting to be caught without.

Living in a world that exploits animals so casually and thoroughly, you can't be blamed for not knowing all the ways. And I don't think anyone would blame you for using possibly-non-vegan toilet paper if the alternative is not to wipe.

Iif you're doing the best you can, you can't let perfect be the enemy of good.

@amt Sorry to curse you with the knowledge. If it means anything, doing the best you can means doing the best you can.

If you're able to, an option is to install a bidet and switch to septic-safe bamboo TP. (A good TP should break down in water over night)

@munin @mcc "Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein". Also, if it advertises extra vitamin E, that might be a wheat byproduct

@demofox @mcc what dark corner of the internet did that fetish crawl out of?

@mcc - - I once had a brand of dog shampoo that bragged that it involved "no animal testing".... Umm, I begged to differ. I'm fairly certain that it must've been tested at least once, on a dog, before mass production.
